Of particular note is the comprehensive treatment approach available to patients with foot problems related to diabetes. The Washington University School of Medicine / Barnes-Jewish Hospital Diabetic Center and Wound Ostomy Center provides care and support for patients with foot problems related to diabetes. They are focused on prevention, salvage options, amputations, pedorthic and orthotic management, and wound management of the diabetic foot.
In addition to the orthopedic surgeon, team members include physiatrists (physicians who specialize in the physical medicine and rehabilitation of a wide array of problems affecting the musculoskeletal system), physical therapists, nurses, wound-care specialists, cast technicians, certified pedorthists, certified orthotists and certified prosthetists.
Specialty Services
Specialty services include the use of shockwave therapy, a non-invasive method for treating chronic heel pain caused by plantar fasciitis, as well as advanced microsurgical techniques. On-location rehabilitative services are provided in both an inpatient and out patient setting and are designed to teach patients proper exercises that are focused on return of range of motion, strengthening of the foot and ankle, and correction of any gait problems. Ultrasound, ice massage, or other therapies also are used to help manage pain.
