Together they treat 500 lung cancer patients annually at the Siteman Cancer Center of Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine.
Conditions and diseases that are managed by this group of thoracic surgeons include swallowing disorders, benign esophageal disease, esophageal cancer, reflux disorders, myasthenia gravis, thoracic trauma and mediastinal tumors, airway obstruction, emphysema, lung cancer, hyperhidrosis and mediastinal tumors.
The lung transplant program at Barnes-Jewish Hospital is among the most active transplant centers in the world. Annually, 55-60 lung transplants are performed, with a cumulative total of more than 1000 transplants since 1988.
The team continues to innovate and develop surgical techniques and medical regimens that are recognized as the gold standards in lung transplantation and thoracic surgery.
Washington University thoracic surgeons were the first to develop and remain active in lung volume reduction surgery to treat COPD. The service is accredited as a Center of Excellence by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), with more than 450 procedures performed and many more patients treated and evaluated.
Latest Developments
This group of thoracic surgeons employs a range of advanced imaging techniques and innovative surgical approaches to accomplish complex lung resections. They currently utilize minimally invasive or VATS (video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery) lobectomies as a standard of care offers lung-sparing outcomes in patients with lung cancer. Other strategies such as sublobar resection and stereotactic radiation are offered in a multidisciplinary manner. Other thoracic operations, such as esophagectomy and thymectomy, are also performed with minimally invasive and novel techniques.
